A REPORT into the number of empty homes in Cornwall has highlighted an alarming number of unoccupied properties.
The Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Community Profiles Insight Report revealed that Helston and The Lizard has one of the highest proportions of vacant properties with 1880 potential homes currently vacant – a whopping 12.4% of all housing stock.
Cornwall Council employ an empty homes team which works with owners of long-term empty properties to find ways to bring them back into use. Yet it appears the scheme is clearly failing with many owners stating they are not being given enough support and information and are not aware that loans and schemes exist to make derelict properties habitable.
With so many empty homes being in a poor state of repair, and perhaps rather than letting them rot, should the authority be permitted to make a compulsory purchase to allow properties to be renovated and rented out to families on the council waiting list?
