Helston’s Christmas Lights were taken down and stored away over the weekend. They’ve had a real hammering over the last few weeks – high winds and heavy rain, and we struggled to keep them lit during the last week or so, but we hope you enjoyed seeing Helston lit up over the festive season.
Earlier in the year all the support cables that hold our displays up in the air had to be renewed, and all the wall fixings had to be changed from hooks to eyes, and then be stress tested to comply with new health and safety regulations. The bill for this work was over £12,000 and Helston Town Council kindly covered the cost of this major expense, but the Lights themselves are run purely on donations and all time given is voluntary – no one gets paid to put Helston’s Lights up!
Thank you to the members of the public and the handful of businesses that have already donated towards the Lights Fund – your contribution is much appreciated. However, overall, the level of donations received has been the lowest ever. Letters were distributed to all businesses in town mid-December so maybe their usual donation is on it’s way now that Christmas and the New Year are out of the way?
IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO DONATE! We’ve still got bills to pay. It cost £600 to hire in the PA system and speakers for the switch-on night, over £1500 has been spent on materials to rebuild the new stage and Santa’s Grotto, and it costs over £3000 just to insure the events we put on, mainly due to the sheer number of people that attend on for the big switch-on!
Donations can be made as follows:
By BACS, using the following bank details: Account No: 00576740 / Sort code: 30-94-07 (HELSTON XMAS LIGHTS COMMITTEE)
By cheque, made out to ‘Helston Christmas Lights’, and sent to: Robert Williams, 10 Meneage Street, Helston TR13 8AB
By cash – can be dropped into J C Williams Furnishers, 10 Meneage Street, Helston
Any donation, large or small, would be greatly appreciated.
