Historic first FA Vase game for Helston ends in gallant defeat

A HUGE crowd turned out at Kellaway Parc on Saturday as Helston AFC hosted their historic first FA Vase game.

Their opponents were Team Solent who had travelled more than 200 miles for the fixture and they began brightly and had Helston under early pressure with keeper Barrie Wyatt having to punch a powerful shot clear in the opening minutes.
The visitors continued to press the action and it was only the Helston keeper, who had a superb game, that kept them in the game at times.

Eventually the deadlock was broken when Tynell Mitford broke clear and scored in the 33rd minute, the ball thundering against the crossbar and bouncing inside the line before flying back out of the goal. There was momentary confusion about whether the ball had crossed the line, however from my vantage point I could clearly see that it had.

Mitford added a second shortly after the break but Helston showed incredible fighting spirit and refused to yield a yard they did not have to and they were rewarded when Matt Buchan shot low into the far corner to pull one back.

The goal spurred Helston on and the game took a turn as the home side pushed Team Solent back and looked the more dangeous of the two. They forced corners and the defenders were being troubled as Helston looked for the leveller.

However it never came and Team Solent now progress to the next round for the first time in their history. For Helston though, they can hold their heads up high. They played with passion and everyone left the ground thoroughly entertained.
