With colder weather just around the corner, many residents may be looking to place ageing and untested electric blankets back on their beds ready for winter.
In the UK, there are approximately 1000 fires each year caused by faulty electric blankets. Last year safety checks in Cornwall found a third of blankets were faulty when tested.
Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Protection, Sue James, said: “These free checks detect the faults that you won’t be able to see, such as the breakdown of the insulation protecting the heating cables and faulty controllers with no overheating protection.
“Electric blankets should be tested every three years and the faults that were discovered with blankets in Cornwall last year were the same faults that have been attributed to house fires around the country.”
To test your electric blanket, visit Helston’s Community Fire Station on October 3 between 1pm and 4pm.
