Craig Saunders is the new Helston RFC first team captain

Helston RFC  have unveiled Craig Saunders as their new first team captain after Director of Rugby, Niall Devenish decided to put the nomination of the new first team captain for the 2016/17 season to the vote.

Three members of the squad put their names in the hat for consideration and the voting was extremely close with only one vote separating first and second places, with second place actually drawing on the same amount of votes.

Craig started playing rugby for Helston when he was 12, his first Coach at the Club was recently retired Gary Mcstein and they followed each other through from U12’s all the way through to the senior team. Craig has played well over 100 first team games and around 170 combined first and second team games.

On being nominated for the captaincy Craig said “It means a lot to me to be nominated as captain as I am a Helston boy through and through and I have played for the club all my life, I also look forward to helping the club move forward, this season I would like to aim for a top four finish and have a good cup run. With the new coaching set up and some of the Colts coming through into the 1st team It would be great to cause a few upsets in the league this year”.

After the vote, Niall and the coaching team decided to go with two vice captains who will be Dan Miners and Calvin Warwick. Dan will take up the roll of pack leader and vice-captain, having proven himself over the past few years to be a vital member of the team and an outstanding front row forward. Calvin will take control of the back and has really raised his game over the last couple of seasons and has moved from full back into the fly half position where is understanding and knowledge of the game has really started to show through, he is great tactical player with a huge future with Helston.

Helston’s first home League game will be played on September 10th with a 3pm kick off, also that day the Vets team play Greenmount Carpets at 1pm and the Colts will also have a home fixture. The club wants to offer an open invitation to everyone to come along on the day to watch some fantastic grassroots rugby.
