LAST week’s column suggesting alternative uses for the rarely-used car park at Trengrouse Way generated a healthy online debate.
Many people disagreed with my proposal of redeveloping the area with a housing development and free car park for shoppers, yet it was good to see people engaging and sharing ideas.
To be clear, my suggestion focused on the car park and not the privately-owned former supermarket, as the owners of the building can do whatever they wish with the property, yet is clearly in need on redevelopment too.
Most online ideas were for the building to be turned into a bowling alley. However, it may be worth remembering that Ocean Bowl in Falmouth had to close last year even with significantly more residents in the area including thousands of students on its doorstep.
Others suggested the building would be an ideal site for Aldi or Iceland, yet as several supermarkets have already failed in that location I doubt it would seem an attractive proposal.
Interesting ideas for the car park included an events square, a larger medical facility to cater to the growing local population or free/reduced charge parking for local residents experiencing problems finding a space on surrounding streets.
All of those seem exciting and viable. What’s your big idea?
